I connect the ‘I” to the “We” with singing:
- Singing and songwriting is transformation, if I dig deep into my soul to bring up material for songs, so that I can touch the universal subconscious layer. My themes are: how to be less burdened by our ancestors’ inheritance, how to grow in our love and sex life etc, so essentially how to love and how to be loved – that’s why people connect to it. As an ethnographer, I use the framework of Arnold van Genep’s theory of rites of passage in the singing and songwriting practice.
- The paradox of the individually-common creative process: more I’m personal in my songwriting, more it can serve a community. People of my tribe feel more alive, connected. We need to give a meaning to the actual global transformation, to understand the new sense of “we”, and to find our own personal place in it. Active singing and songwriting are among the best tools for that. My formula is: healthier and more integrated “me”= stronger and more connected “we”.
